Child support and extraordinary expenses

Child support is nothing more than money paid by one parent to another for the care of a child (or children). As simple as this sounds, this situation can actually be extremely complicated.

Fortunately, the federal government has implemented Child Support Guidelines. With this legislation in place, there is not as much gray area in regards to how much child support is paid by one parent to the other.

However, it is important to become familiar with what the court refers to as extraordinary expenses. To go along with child support, these expenses are available with some common examples including:

  • Educational costs, such as tutoring
  • Day care expenses
  • Healthcare expenses
  • Extracurricular activities

In the event that an expense can be added to section 7 of the Child Support Guidelines, it is typically shared by both parents based on their income. For example, if the parents earn the same amount of money, they will be expected to split the expense 50/50. But if one parent earns significantly more than the other, he or she will be asked to pay more money for the expense.
